James Dennis ‘Jeigh’ Singleton: St. Louis’ Go-To Fashion Guy Taught A Legion Of Designers At Wash U

Dear Friends of Maturity and Its Muse:

On Sunday, January 11, 2015, with the death of Jeigh Singleton, we lost one of our organization’s staunchest supporters and a member of our Board of Directors. I attach the link to Jeigh’s obituray which appeared in today’s St. Louis Public Radio. In it, Gloria Ross captured the essence of Jeigh. http://news.stlpublicradio.org/post/james-dennis-jeigh-singleton-st-louis-go-fashion-guy-taught-legion-designers-wash-u

I am proud to say that my friendship with Jeigh began in 1983 when he exhibited the clothing he designed in my gallery. Brentwood Gallery, located in suburban St. Louis, held the first exhibition of wearable art the city had ever viewed. Not only did Jeigh bring his pieces but arrived with all of his students and their designs, too. How happy they made me! Through the years, Jeigh and I continued to meet occasionally and upon each occassion that we met, we picked up right where we left off…never more so, that when he agreed to join the Board of my new organization and then, when I asked if he know anyone who would talk about fashion and muses to a group I had been invited to address…he said, “Well, what about me?” With that I fell off my chair with shock, surprise, and excitement. He charmed the group regaling them with his stories about Washington Avenue and the St. Louis dress business…they kept him talking for hours. Good soul, sweet man that he was…he made dates to meet them several times more. That’s the kind of great, one of a kind, guy Jeigh Singleton was.

R.I.P. Dear Friend
