From Jim Crow to Barack Obama May 7

A bit of information on Maturity and Its Muse’s May 7 Silver Stages Series performance at the Missouri History Museum. The program begins at 10:30 and is Ta Da (imagine very loud drum rolls as I am thrilled to be able to present this program. Denise will screen her award winning documentary “From Jim Crow to Barack Obama,” answer questions and introduce two of the film’s stars. What a great ending to our spring 2014 Silver Stages Series. You all attend. You will be enthralled and ever so happy that you spent the morning with Denise and her expressive, thought provoking visual.

Denise Ward-Brown began making documentary videos in Ghana, West Africa as a Fulbright Senior Scholar in 1997-98.  Her first video subjects include numerous traditional celebrations in Ghana for which she received the 2nd Place Documentary Award at the Abuja International Film Festival, Nigeria in 2004 and the Project Series ‘03-’04 Grant from The Contemporary Art Museum Saint Louis 2003.

 The documentary you will see, “Jim Crow to Barack Obama” received the Best Runner-Up Documentary Award at the 2013 San Francisco Black Film Festival and the Best Feature Length Film Award at the 2013 St Louis Filmmakers’ Showcase.  At the 2013. St Louis International Film Festival, it  opened for the ‘Human Rights Sidebar’, which focused on human-rights issues in the U.S. and the world.  Production award grants for this film include the CALOP Grant, University City, Missouri  in 2011, Kresge Arts in St. Louis Grant in 2010 and a 2010 Faculty Research Grant from the Sam Fox School of Design & Visual Arts, Washington University in St. Louis.
